Julius John Lankes (1884-1960) was a talented printmaker, engraver, illustrator, teacher, and writer. In 1930 he published a book titled Virginia Woodcuts which focused on American wood engraving and his work in the state of Virginia. Just two years later he published a book on the medium of woodcut printing titled A Woodcut Manual. He participated in a larger intellectual community, maintaining friendships with renowned poets Robert Frost and Robert Peter Tristram Coffin. Lankes provided illustrations for Frost’s books of poetry titled New Hampshire and West Running Brook and for Coffin’s book of poetry titled Salt Water Farm. He died in 1960 at the age of 76 in Durham, North Carolina.
