Blessed Marie-Céline of the Presentation, born Jeanne-Germaine Castang in 1878, grew up as one of several children in an impoverished but religious family. Experiencing polio at the age of four, which left her with a permanent limp, Jeanne-Germaine likely contracted tuberculosis. After being rejected from joining several monasteries due to her disability, Jeane-Germaine finally joined the Community of Poor Clares at Talence, taking the name Marie-Celine of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Though her days were impacted by the advancing of tuberculosis, she still chose to live the austere and contemplative lifestyle of the nuns, passing away at the age of nineteen in May of 1897.
