Stories of Women Religious

Introduction

The lives of women religious throughout history have been varied and complex. It is not subversive to say there is a lot to be learned from their stories, yet so often these narratives are sidelined.

Drawing from 19th and 20th century materials available in the Pamphlet Collection at the Rare Books Department at Catholic University, this project hopes to make available and memorable the stories of various women religious, bringing those narratives from the past forward in order to be learned from and remembered. While this exhibit will have contextual information on each woman mentioned, readers are encouraged to read the pamphlets for themselves on JSTOR, where their stories will be told in more depth.

It is important to acknowledge that some of the pamphlets in this collection are products of their time, and contain ideas and depictions, particularly of Indigenous people and African Americans, that do not match the values of today. Some of these women participated in the institution of slavery. Please read with care.
