Per Capita, Engineering Degrees Remain Constant
The numbers of engineering bachelor's degrees awarded annually per capita have remained essentially unchanged at about 250 since the 1995 academic year (AY). The graph shown below (degrees per million population) indicates significant fluctuations prior to this period (a maximum of 330 in AY1984-85 and a minimum of 176 in AY1975-76).
Many individual engineering disciplines, however, have shown significant trend variations in recent years. Aerospace, biological/biomedical, civil and mechanical engineering have been increasing substantially; computer and electrical engineering have been declining. Among the smaller disciplines nuclear and petroleum engineering have been increasing recently; environmental engineering degrees continue to decline.

- NOT WHAT STUDENTS NEED From ASEE February 2010 "Robert Frost's poem "The Road Not Taken" probably doesn't top the required reading list at many engineering schools — but perhaps it should...Encouraging students to forge new pathways into engineering and to graduate better prepared may require educators to pursue unfamiliar routes, too. But that could make all the difference." Mary Lord
- From Fish to Infinity - Opinionator Blog - NYTimes.com ...numbers start to seem a bit mysterious. They apparently exist in some sort of Platonic realm, a level above reality. In that respect they are more like other lofty concepts (e.g., truth and justice), and less like the ordinary objects of daily life. Upon further reflection, their philosophical status becomes even murkier. Where exactly do numbers come from? Did humanity invent them? Or discover them?

Who was Rube Goldberg?
"Best known for his “inventions”, Rube’s early years as an engineer informed his most acclaimed work. A Rube Goldberg contraption – an elaborate set of arms, wheels, gears, handles, cups, and rods, put in motion by balls, canary cages, pails, boots, bathtubs, paddles, and live animals – takes a simple task and makes it extraordinarily complicated. He had solutions for How To Get The Cotton Out Of An Aspirin Bottle, imagined a Self-Operating Napkin, and created a Simple Alarm Clock – to name just a few of his hilariously depicted drawings."
