  1. "The Living Wage,"(front) an economic and moralistic text written by Catholic U professor Msgr. John A. Ryan. An expansion of his Catholic U thesis, it was an early example of an argument for a minimum wage in the United States and was influential in later New Deal legislation. (Source: John A. Ryan papers)

Statement on Farm Labor, national Conference of Catholic Bishops, November 13, 1968, (back) In November, the National Conference of Catholic Bishops issued its Statement on Farm Labor, which asked Congress to pass legislation to include farmworkers under the National Labor Relations Act, include them under minimum wage laws, and include them in national unemployment insurance.   2. Women Delegates at Knights of Labor Convention, Richmond, Virginia, October 1886. (back) The Knights of Labor was the first nationwide labor union in the United States and it was spearheaded by Catholic leaders such as Terence Powderly. It included members of both sexes as well as Black and white members. (Source: Terence Powderly papers).
