Many medical and nursing databases use a form of controlled vocabulary known as MEsH or Medical Subject Headings. Designed to work with medical terminology, MEsH headings perform the same function as LC subject headings; articles, books and other media which an indexer recognize as being associated with a particular subject matter are assigned the proscribed subject heading.
