Artist's Statement

This sculpture is the result of a series of events starting with an honest exploration of my belief in the Incarnation in my primary artistic 'grammar' which is form. I sought to interrogate my faith in the second person of the Blessed Trinity becoming bones and muscles here on earth.

A priest while visiting my studio in NYC suggested that I should familiarize myself with Pope John Paul II's "Theology of the Body" as he has made similar explorations in catechesis. My exposure to these ideas prompted me to dive deeply into this understanding and let it overflow in the form of this cruciform figure of Christ.

Shortly after its completion it was exhibited in the graduation show at the New York Academy of Art in 2001, during which the school caught fire and the crucifix was seriously damaged.

This "Theology of the Body" has been a transformational revelation to both me and many of my students in our lives and work.
