Introduction

This guide is a starting point for students and scholars researching medieval philosophers (AD 430 - 1400).  It lists primary sources, secondary sources and select tertiary sources such as companions, biographies, or bibliographies.  Please note that not all the philosophers are covered in this guide.  Some medieval philosophers have their own dedicated guides.  These include St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas (Please check Library Guides).

The reference material for Medieval Philosophy can be found in the Religious Studies and Philosophy Library, 3rd floor, Rm. 314 in the call number range B 720-765 and in room 316 in the folios section. Works by and about individual medieval philosophers can be found across different call number ranges.  Some examples: the primary texts of medieval philosophers such as Augustine and Aquinas can be found in the range BQ 5732-6889, while many of the primary texts can be found within Corpus Christianorum (BQ 310. C73) and Patrologia Latina (BQ 310 .M351) series.  The rest of the materials can be found in the Stacks.  Floor map of Mullen Library; Map of Mullen Stacks. Check the WRLC catalog for monographs and journals that could be applicable to your topic. Check the CU’s e-journals for full text journal articles online.
