Books can give you background, historical context, and the "big picture." Always remember to follow up using the author's bibliography for more sources.

Open Access Textbooks

Open Educational Materials (OER) are freely available textbooks and supplemental material that can augment or take the place of costly copyrighted textbooks. To learn more, please visit our Open Educational Resources Guide.

Below are some selected openly available material based on the Department of Psychology course requirements. This collection will be updated as needed.

Search WorldCat for books in other libraries. Or search Google Books to see if you can get the book online.

Please note: some books, such as encyclopedia, dictionaries, and handbooks, may be shelved in the Reference Reading Room.

There are many ways to locate a book written by a famous or authoritative psychologist.

Of course, the easiest way is that you already know the book title or author. In this case, you just need to search the book title or author in the SearchBox, and then request it or locate it in library stacks.

If you don't know any books or authors, here is a way to find them.

1. Come to Mullen Library Reference Reading Room, find the "Encyclopedia of Psychology" (BF 31 .E52 2000);
2. Pick the vol. 8, and go to the Index section at the back of that volume;
3. Look for the area that you are interested in, such as "developmental psychology", and "social psychology", in the Index;
4. Usually in the Index, under the big entry for that area, it also lists some sub-entries, which includes the famous psychologists in that area. You can find more information about that person and his/her works in the indicated volume and pages.
5. Go to the SearchBox to search for that book or that author that you found from Step 4.
