It Came From the Archives: Preservation Nightmares in Special Collections

Chilling Crimes

Juggling access and security is a persistent challenge in special collections. The overwhelming majority of patrons are honest scholars, but staff must be prepared for the worst case scenario when it comes to book thieves or treasure hunters. Proper documentation, controlled access, and collaboration with professional associations are the proactive steps to avoid theft (and recover lost items).

Reader beware - this book has a curse upon it!

Cursed Book, 1746

This copy of Works of Jonathan Swift contains a warning to all would-be thieves, ““Steal not this book my honest friend for fear the gallows should be your end”. Due to the high value of books in the pre-modern age, book curses often served as a safety measure to prevent theft.

Adventures of the Incredible Librarian, Preservation Graphics, 1990

This comic, part of a promotion for scanning equipment, highlights the work of a super-powered librarian that recovers stolen pages from her library.

Librarians are the frontline defense against theft and destruction of collections.

Equal parts adorable and unsettling.

Swiss Guard Figurine (Museum Collection, Magner M478) Uncanny dolls are a common feature of archival and museum collections, but we feel better knowing that this Swiss Guard doll is ready to protect the collections from evildoers.
