Xi'an County Town Center
A 1930s picture taken by a Japanese photographer shows Xi’an county’s town center (today part of Liaoyuan city, Jilin Province), which was the nearest town to Dr. Chang’s home village. In the 1940s, the Japanese military briefly detained General Jonathan M. Wainwright, the highest-ranking American POW during the Second World War, in the city. Notice the bilingual billboard in the middle, which juxtaposes Japanese (right) and Chinese (left) characters for Japan’s famous blood-fortifying tonic “Blutose,” a subtler sign of the country’s dominance in Manchuria.

Dr. Chang and his peer Chinese scientists during their studies at Cal Tech, early 1940s. Shortly after the 1949 Communist takeover in China, friends in this photo would part ways with each other, some temporarily, others for good. Dr. Chieh Chien Chang and Dr. Yuan Jialiu decided to pursue a career in the United States. Despite their initial career in American institutions, Dr. Qian, Dr. Yu, and Dr. Lu chose to serve their home country after the Communist takeover and spent the rest of their academic lives there. The Qian family in 1955
Qian Xuesen and his family on their way back to China in 1955. Allegations that Qian was a Communist effectively led to the suspension of his security clearance with the US Army, but his actual political allegiance at that time remains a mystery today. He was under house arrest for three years before leaving for Communist China in September 1955. He led a remarkable career there and became the father of the Chinese missile program. Qian’s cousin, Qian Xueju, chose to become a U.S. citizen and later a chief engineer at Boeing. Xueju’s son, Roger Y. Tsien, was an acclaimed American chemist who won the Nobel Prize in 2008.

Tsinghua University in 1966
This photo captures the fervor and madness in the beginning of the Cultural Revolution: on August 24, 1966, students in Beijing clamored to tear down Tsinghua University’s western-styled gate, established in 1911. A giant statue of Mao would replace it in 1967. It would take 25 years before the gate was rebuilt.
