You should know...

This Guide aims to assist you in your music research, whether you are just starting your first Music History paper or writing your doctoral dissertation. It will also be helpful for non-music majors and anyone interested in researching music topics.

Our collection supports the undergraduate curriculum well, and we have many resources for graduate and post-graduate study. Many resources not owned by CUA may be obtained through CLS (Consortium Loan Service) or Interlibrary Loan.

Our electronic holdings are quickly becoming one of the greatest assets of our collection. In addition to all of the standard journal databases such as JSTOR, ProjectMuse, International Index to Music Periodicals (IIMP), and Academic Search Premier, we subscribe to the Classical Scores Library which has many full scores from Boosey & Hawkes, Universal, and more, including many scores not in the Public Domain and therefore not available electronically anywhere else. We also subscribe to the Naxos Music Library, a streaming audio library.

Liber Amicorum: Festschriften for music scholars and nonmusicians, 1840-1966 - Zdravko Blažekovič, James R. Cowdery
Call Number: ML128.M8 L5 2009
ISBN: 1932765042
Publication Date: 2009
Liber amicorum completes a dyad with RILM’s Speaking of music: Music conferences, 1835–1966, a similarly structured retrospective bibliography of conference proceedings. These two unique book genres—Festschriften and conference proceedings—comprise uncommonly important collections of scholarly essays in the histories of academic disciplines, presenting groundbreaking research directly to colleagues and mentors.

The Oxford History of Western Music - Taruskin, Richard
Call Number: ML 160 T18 2005 v.1-6
ISBN: 0195169794
Intends to illuminate, through a representative sampling of masterworks, those themes, styles, and currents that give shape and direction to each musical age. Taking a critical perspective that challenges the wisdom of the field, the author sets the details of music--the chronological sweep of figures, works, and musical ideas-- within the larger context of world affairs and cultural history.
